The wildflowers had harsh conditions this year.  Deep snows and a very late spring.  We caught camas in July at Lolo Pass ‘tho they usually come in June and the glacier lilies at Logan’s Pass in Glacier National Park pushed up snow to get through and help make the mountain meadows.

I wrote this poem quite a while ago, but the tenaciousness of the wildflowers I saw in Montana has me thinking about it again:

The Sum of These Parts

Trinity of petals:

cream laced with butter,

silk smoothed by light,

each as if it was a baby’s eyelid resting.

But still they survive downpours,

and still they fight pesticide’s kisses,

and still they taste noon’s fire

to stand beyond reason and science and chance:

one diminutive god

at the edge

of a field.
